There are many new systems currently available for heating the house. The technologies for heating homes are constantly being improved and more and more innovations are introduced in heating systems. Therefore it is worth to devote some time to thinking over the selection of the heating installation, which will be applied in our own house, especially that the decision may have important consequences for the future.
New options for heating
One of innovative and relatively new options for heating the house are heat pumps. This is usually an unknown solution for many investors, but due to its increasing popularity, it is also an option worth to consider.
Currently, the most commonly used solution for heating a home is a heating boiler. The main difference between a heating boiler and the heat pump is that the former is the source of the heat, and the latter is not. This is a very interesting concept. The source of heating in the heat pumps are water, ground or air. The pump does not in fact generate the heat, but rather transfers or moves it from one place to the other.
One of the main factors that need to be taken into consideration by investors is the price of the installation. In the case of heat pumps, we have to pay a lot for the installation at the beginning, but the costs of its exploitation are low, and it uses a considerably smaller amount of electricity, which allows to save on bills.
It is very difficult to determine the price of the heat pump. The range of prices is really wide, because it may differ depending on the house. The cost of purchasing the heat pump largely depends on the demand for heat. And the demand for heat depends on how well the house is insulated, and what temperature is comfortable for its residents. The price also depends on the type of heat pump we select.
There are three types of heat pumps we can choose from. There are air-, ground- and water-source heat pumps.
Air-source heat pumps do not need any additional installation for collecting heat, and this makes it easier, faster and cheaper to mount them. This pump uses the energy of the air and transfers it to the water circulating in the heating system, but it is not as effective as ground and water pumps. This is due to the fact that the air temperature in the winter is relatively low, and in countries where the temperatures drop below zero at certain seasons it is not possible for this type of pump to independently heat the house or provide hot water. Therefore these pumps need to work with another source of heat, for example electric heaters or gas boiler, which significantly increases the costs of its operation.
Geothermal heat pumps use the earth as the source of heat. A properly designed and made heat exchanger is of a vital importance in this type of a pump. However, this requires complicated ground works. These pumps have very good exploitation parameters and they do not rely on the changes in external temperatures, since the temperature of the ground is more stable than the air temperature. At a certain point below the ground, the temperature is always over 0°C. An average cost of this installation is 40,000 – 60,000 PLN, which is a lot higher than in the case of air-source pumps, the price of which is about 30,000. But the costs of heating are lower.
The last type of heat pump is water-source pump. This device moves the heat from the source of water to the household. If the temperature of water ranges from 5 to 8 0°C, this type of pump is very efficient, even during very cold days and nights. The water-source heat pumps may be used for floor heating or convection heaters. They also generate less CO2 than conventional heating systems. Their coefficient of performance is the highest out of all heat pumps. The price is not low, but we can try to get a financial support for the investment because it uses renewable energy sources. However, anyone thinking of buying water-source heat pump has to bear in mind that since they change the temperature of ground waters and affect bacteriology, sometimes a license for the installation may be required.
